so yeah... Yay! I got it! This is soooo awesome! I never thought just a simple hobby and interest would get me this! That means I'll be in the ANA during the summer and at the World Fair of Money all 3 days! But... they say there will be a research project I'll be using the collection for the class I'll be teaching next semester, but what else can I do so I won't look like a total waste to the ANA? I was thinking about something like technology and how it affects banknotes (not just constant rotation of designs but also new security features) but that's venturing into banknotes... and might not fully use the resources of the collection. So.... anyone have an interesting topic for research. I'll find out all that I can about it!

How about finding a substance to mint cents with that won't disintegrate in a short time while still being cost affective? John1

Congratulations, that is a prestigious position While you are at the ANA during the summer, try to get out and explore Colorado Springs- it is quite a beautiful area. Let me know if you would like any suggestions, I have visited many times and I consider it my home away from home. For those not familiar with the Harry Bass Collection, his core collection is on permanent loan to the ANA and it consists of a complete set of early gold varieties, a complete set of $3 gold coins, and an extensive pattern collection in addition to several other holdings. wd1040, Big CONGRATS! How about honoring Harry with a study of the Sheldon Scale of grading. Harry was a huge proponent at a time when most others lived in the dark ages. No limits on how you could approach this ... historical, future look, cause and effect. Keep us posted!

Thanks everyone!
ooh... there was a time when there was so Sheldon scale? How confusing those times would have been! I guess there's going to be many many questions I'll have too but many many resources for me to pore over!

Er so the question is, are you researching into coins or banknotes?
Sorry it's just that I don't know what this internship is.

Quote: Sorry it's just that I don't know what this internship is. Note: link following is a .pdf.http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cf...tentID=15205That will explain it. Congratulations, wd. You've every reason to be proud and happy right now. If it were mine, I'd be venturing into the concept of how modern technology can assist and improve the preservation and dissemination of numismatic information into the future. Digital photography and the Internet have radically changed information storage and dissemination in many other scholarly areas; I wonder if collaborative research can change the paradigm of the "single individual making one specialized area his life's work" which currently defines numismatic knowledge accumulation?

CONGRATS! If I were given the opportunity to teach it would be over the decline of use of gold, then silver, and now basically most metals are being depleted. You can go green on this topic and really spin it in any direction you want, just remember basic coin etiquette of not introducing hard politics or religious beliefs (not only in coins, but in general people can be sensitive). This is a COMMON topic of course (many papers have been written about Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz), though. If you want to impress them, then a more original topic (than mine) will needed.
Your idea though is just as valid. Talk about how the Chinese used it, how its production is affected by wars, and also the modern paper - polymer. Talk about silver certificates, gold bonds, Confederate money, federal reserve noets, treasury notes, and how they were redeemable for real money, and not regarded as legal tender.
I'm rambling, so I'll leave it to your interests.. Obviously mine is silver, but go your own way, that's where you'll shine! Good luck!
