Found this guy a couple nights ago rollsearching and just set it off to the side. Not sure if this would be considered a strike-through or not. But, even if it isn't, what are the key elements you are looking for to determine a strike-through.

I've been doing searches and find plenty of pictures and examples, but no real explanations for confirming. I do like the ones where the object is still attached to the coin, though! Those are really cool!

Anyway, on with the pics, what do you guys make of this guy? The only reason I wondered if it is a strike-through, is because the "clean" area seems just so slightly incuse. But, I'm not completely sure if it's just a height difference from the "dirty" parts of the coin.

Note the "dip" or "depression" below the date near the rim as well.

Looks like tape is stuck to the coin. Try peeling it off to see if it is. IMHO

It's not tape, there's nothing there. Plus, wouldn't tape or anything ON the coin show a raised edge rather that incuse?

And what about the gouge/depression?

Sorry, I do not see anything that looks like a struck through- the strength of the strike is uniform throughout the coin. If it was struck through something, there would be an area with some detail obscured or an obvious incuse mark. It appears that something covered that area of the coin at some point, slowing the oxidation process and leaving a bit of the mint red color intact.

It makes sense that it was covered at one point (maybe then there was tape!).

I figured I would probably be looking for a raised edge if it were struck through something. But, what is that strange depression under the date?

It looks like its been outside/in water for a time. It could be dirt or a split in the plating. What ever, its a toss back into circulation coin.

Thanks coop. As always I appreciate your feedback. That area below the date is actualy gouged out, there is metal missing.

But, anyway, got my books today!

Time to go study and hopefully my posts and pics will be more intelligent from here out.
