Long story short...I'm bored. I ran out of cents to search, so I've been going through some of my fathers coins. I ran across this 1946-D Washington. Is this a common error?

I appears that it is Machine Doubling. Look at the upper left on the LL on Dollar. It appears like the metal was pushed instead of being wider that a RPM (Re-Punched-Mint mark) should have. Check other devices on the coin to see if there is more Machine Doubling on either side.

Can you get a closer picture of the "D?" If you have zoom on your cam, zoom into the microscope.

I do not own a microscope...the close-up was taken with my Sony Cybershot 6.0 in my right hand, and a 30x loupe in my left.

Here's a few more of the mm...I haven't cropped or resized them, but I'm sure that photobucket resized them a bit during the upload.

To be honest, I'm actually pretty darned proud of these pics. It's the first time I've used the loupe with my pocket cam...

Nice pictures, Scotty....because the top serif becomes/is integrated with both sectors of the "D," I, too, suspect it's not a RPM.

However; I'm no expert and, to be honest, I'm just on this side of the "not a RPM" fence.

So, now you have two opinions: coop's, far more experienced than mine; and mine.

That is Machine Doubling on the "R."

Thanks for the most excellent pictures.

Jim

I see it very clear now. Thanks folks. The doubling shows up really well in the #2 photo of my second post.

Thanks again for the help.

Wow, that's nice detail for pocket camera and loupe. Hope there will be more comments on the "D" now.
