As a new Morgan collector of two years or so I am beginning to see that the O Morgans are not nearly struck as well as the S Morgans. This seems especially true in the breast feather area. Sometimes I wonder how the feathers could be almost flat and the other side is perfect as can be. Is this just me or is it that the O's have weaker strikes. What about Philly Morgans? Need help on this. Sent two coins back to different dealers saying there weren't BU grade because of the wear and was told that its because the O's have weak strikes.

Thanks in advance for your anticipated help.

The Morgan's from San Fransisco generally have better strikes than their New Orleans counterparts, especially the San Fransisco Morgans from 1879-1882.

You are definitely correct on your assessment, although I am not sure about the Philadelphia Morgans.

O's have weak strikes normally. I have a MS62 PCGS 1892-O that looks like an AU55 tops with the flat details on both sides. I would have never bought that coin in raw state. nlp

Same here. I have a 1892-0, pcgs ms63 that has almost no detail over the breast feathers. The earlier "o" mints like the '80-o, 81-0 through 85-o are pretty good, better than average strikes, but later strikes are below average to poor. The "s" mint across the board are much better strikes.

Thanks guys. Guess I have to apologize to a few dealers. How come none of the grading books mentions this? These O coins look like MS-64 on one side and AU-55 on the other. Wondered why both sides didn't have equal wear. I normally look at breast feathers first when grading a Morgan. Looks like I was wrong there. Where do you look for wear first on a Morgan? Never mind. Don't tell me and I will bring it up in another topic. Trying to get my 50 posts so I can buy some of your stuff off the forum. My main question was answered. Thanks again. More replies are welcomed.

Keep in mind, in many (most?) cases, die pairs did not live their whole lives together. Dies cracked, and were pulled from service for repair or to be destroyed. A new die would then be paired with the old, worn die, creating coins which were far better-struck on one face than the other.

I just bought an MS-63 1883-O Morgan today, simply because it has good
strong strikes on both sides, and looks MS....
