Is there a online reference guide for Canadian nickels? Looking for known varieties and possible errors to keep my eyes open for by year. I have only been able to locate a few websites on the subject. They did not actually have that much info. I would love a website like coppercoins but for nickels. Searching a box of nickels but not quite sure what to look for. I have been inspecting each coin as I go. The only thing I have noticed so far is that this box is full of beat up nickels. LOL! I'm new to searching nickel boxes. Is this more or less the standard for nickels? It seems like pennies hold their surface so much better then nickels. Trying to work on my nickel collection...only 5 from the box that I have counted as keepers. Only 4 nickels dating pre 1960 in the box. I think I'm searching a searched box. Ahh well. Back to the hunt I go. Maybe the 2000's will produce a keeper or two. Thank you for any info, cladhunter13

I can't help you much with a reference site, but my suggestion would be to hold on to any pre-1982 nickels if you're sifting through a box. 100 nickels weigh exactly one pound and have a face value of $5, currently one pound of nickel is worth $11.20 US. It will not be long before they are all pulled out of circulation, just as silver coins were. The pre-1982's have been as high as 500% of face value in the last couple years.

Actual nickels (pre-1982) are getting harder to find in circulation. Even the cupro-nickel is getting hoarded. How much is in a "box" of nickels? Can I go right to a teller in Canada and ask for this?

A box is 50 rolls, $100 FV. You can try and get a box from the bank, just depends who you get behind the counter. I managed to get 40 rolls out of them last time I was there. I have a feeling that going in to the bank and getting a bunch of coins to sort through is not something that we will be able to do forever :o(
I've got somewhere around 30 pounds of the pre-82 coins so far, and I'm still hoping to hit 100 pounds before they cut me off from the face value game.

Thank you all for the info. About 2/3 of the box were 2000+ in dates. A handfull of 1960's, 3 - 1950's and the rest were a mix of 1970 - 1999. I believe I had 40 that I kept in all and most of those were the 2005 Victory nickels. I just like the way they look. No rabbits in the box. Went through the box of pennies last night as well. Pulled a few oldies. A 1935 Canada was the oldest and pulled a 1936 as well. No DOT on the 36 but it does have a nice sized Cud on the Obverse abut 11:30 position. Also snagged a few wheaties from it as well. I took the nickels back and grabbed 2 more boxes of pennies today. Only opened 2 rolls so far. Pulled a 1926 wheatie. Looks promising. Well...In-laws are ready to eat holiday dinner. Have fun all. I'll post picks of the 36 Cud later tonight. Happy Easter cladhunter13

Put me down for that book on Canadian nickels if it exists.
