Just found this and I was trying to find out if it is a woody or not. I have never seen any but I have seen some pictures.

I have a few that I'm not sure about also. I posted one in the rollsearchers thread the other day and asked if I had found one, but for some reason I get ignored in that thread, so I'm not going to post there anymore. I get more enjoyment posting my roll finds here.

Anyway, is there a split in the upper serif of the mm?

Probably just a hit on the mint mark. That is why it appears larger on the upper serif. It could be a poor copper mix or rolling line in the stock of the planchet. I would nothing extra for this as it is common on several years. Only when it enhances the look does it warrant a premium. Most of the time it is a distraction and something not desired.

These are due to an improper alloy mix. The lines give the tendancy for them to look a little like the grain in wood, hence the name "woodgrain cent". There is no specific defined amount of striping they have to have to call them this, since it's not really much of a numismatic term anyway. It is what it looks like, and none of them warrant much if any premium.

Incidently these are rather common on Lincoln cents from 1909 through the 1920s, then it sort of drops off until the late 1970s and stops with the metal change in 1982. I have found 1980 and 1981 to be the easiest to find in memorials.
