I'm considering purchasing this coin. Do you think the obverse scratch would keep it out of a PCGS or NGC holder? It doesn't seem too bad to me and I've been after a reasonably priced 1875-CC quarter for a while now.

Please let me know your thoughts on grade also!

Gothic,

I'd offer G4 at best for the grade. The reverse is the limiting factor with the loss of rim and letter definition.

Regarding the scratch ... sometimes these holder if the scratch is not "new" in appearance and can reasonably be caused by normal handling. If it appears new and/or like someone intentionally put it there, it may not holder.

The obverse probably makes a technical VG-8 grade given the partial LIBERTY and full rims. The reverse is a textbook AG with the rim wearing into the legend. Heavily-worn coin (and key dates as well) often get more leeway in terms of scratches and circulation marks. I think PCGS or NGC would slab it with at least an AG-3 and possibly a G-4.

List price in low grade is in the $100 ballpark so the grading cost is a significant percentage of the value. If it does get into a no-problem slab it will be easier to sell it if/when you decide to put it on the market.

I agree with Seated and Jaobler. Also,

Although:

I'd buy a plastic holder for it and save on grading costs (for now).

I wouldnt pay $100 for it. In its condition and taking into consideration who I was buying from (i.e. negotiability), I'd pay up to $70 for it....as is...raw.

Thanks for your feedback all. It's listed for $250 so I think I will pass. Having said that, it is very hard to find 1875 CC quarters in an affordable VG-VF pricing range and decent condition.
