Hi everybody. When I was looking through some rolls of nicles I found a 1970 nickle I needed. I looked at the mint and it was a S. How is that? Arent only modern coins minted in San Fransisco proofs? When I looked in the RedBook it showed the 1970-S as only proof. Can anyone spread some insight on this?

Looking in the 2007 Red Book I show the 70-S is 0.25 for MS63 and 0.50 for MS65. It is a little deceiving bacuse in the Red Book there are 2 lines for the 70-S

I cant be 100% certain, because I'm at work and dont have access to my reference books, but I think that there were several years in the 60's and maybe early 70's where the Sanfrancisco mint struck nickels in business strike for general circulation... At the same time, I believe they also did proof strikes.

Looks to me that there were 2,632,810 proofs struck and 238,832,004 struck for circulation. Maybe one of our Nickel guru's can shed more light on this...

When I get nickel rolls at the bank I usually find several 1970 S nickels. Anyone have any idea why they've been popping up?
