I usually stick to US coins, so I could use some advice from some of you Canadian nickel experts. Is this a large date? What's the grade? Are the prices on coinsandcanada.com pretty accurate? I'm being told that it grades out at VG. I might have the chance to pick this up for way less than the $150.00 that is listed there for the VG large date.

Thank you kiddo. That's the info I'm looking for. It's being listed as VG.

Coinsrfun - what are the diagnostics for determining small date vs. large date?

Thank You,

Matt

I agree with the other re grade, the rim looks to be in surprisingly good shape though.

Pics are really bad I can't tell large or small for sure but a quick tell is if the holes in the first "8" look like ovals lying on their side, then it's a small date. If the holes look like ovals going up and down it's large date.

Edit, just got done with enhancing the photo: small date as far as I can tell.

They call em fishscales (instead of nickels) for slang. Not that it matters. Nickel has become synonymous with five cents. Since they're all plated crap now it's a moot point.

YUK, I wouldn't bother bidding on this coin, unless your looking for a filler. It appears to be a fair at best with a dent on the Reverse side near the date. If you wanna see a nice piece, check out an I.C.C.S., MS-62 Large Date,1858 nickel that is currently on E-bay now. I made the seller an offer yesterday and he's thinking hard about it! Hopefully he'll bite!

IMHO, a product of cupped dies- the head has been worn extensively, but not the rim, and the centre of the reverse is very clear, while the rim is quite worn.
