Well, I found myself dabbling in this hobby after a 25 hiatis. Now after reading, and LEARNING, from coming to this forum daily I have now dove in head first. I cannot wait to get home each day and read what others post while I sit there and search rolls. I was once a sportscard dealer. I started back in the hayday before Mr. Beckett came along and ruined it. Now it is hard to even give them away. I have convinced my wife that coins have got to be the safest investment and hobby ever. I told her that coins do not inflate in value rapidly, just steadily over time. I told her that you RARELY see the value of coins go down, except for the few gimmick oddities that come along. The one thing I miss about sportscards was doing the card shows. A room full of people that share your same passion is awesome. Plus making a little profit never hurts. I think I want to try my hand at coin shows. Living in Houston there are plenty of smaller shows to get me started.
My question to coin show dealers is this, are there any particular trends in the show market right now? Are there specific things you get asked about over and over? Is there something you left back at the house or shop that, had you brought it to the show, you would have sold out of?
I am mainly focused on cents, nickels, and foreign coins right now. Will those be enough to pay for my table, and put some change in my pocket? I am not asking that you divulge you "secret recipe" to success. I just really want to start on the right foot.
Thanks in advance.

First off from one Houstonian to another. Welcome. The prices of table at these shows fluctuate from show to show. You may want to contact the Bellaire Coin Club or the Pasadena Coin Club. They hold a number of shows throughout the year and I believe the cost for a table is quite reasonable. The Bellaire Club has a show coming up next month, if you would like to attend and get a feel for it. I have been a number of times and it is a nice laid back atmosphere. https://goccf.com/t/63266

No input on the shows - but I will agree with your assessment on coins vs. sports cards. I used to collect sportscards, stopped in about 1998 or so. It just got way out of hand. Too much speculation.
Welcome - and good luck at the coin show!

I was already thinking of going to the Bellaire show to kind of "check it out". I will most likely go to see to variety of selections on each table, asking prices, and observe what people seem to be after. I do agree those shows have reasonable table prices. I would be interested in how well the turn out is for the show.

Whew, the last two shows at opening time, you could hardly walk in there it was so crowded.
I can say this there were a number of people looking for specific things, but for the most part, bullion was the big seller.

Thanks. Do you think the trends on ebay hold true at shows as well?

A couple of the dealers at the Bellaire show but from ebay so expect them to be priced higher. Most will work with you on prices. My rule is if a dealer is rude or abrupt to my questions I just say thank you and move on. A couple of them know me by sight and have learnt just to offer their best price from the get go. I never pay attention to whats marked on the 2x2 or slab I judge each coin on its own merit. Take a gray sheet with you and dont be afraid to use it infront of the dealer. Grade the coins yourself there are a couple there who add about 5 points to a coins grade.

Reading my last reply it might come across as harsh. The coin show is one of the better ones in the area and most dealers are honest but they are not all knowledgeable about their stock. As with everything buyer beware.

Agree with nohope......I get to the Bellaire show at least twice each year. I have a few favotite dealers that are very reasonable and willing to at least entertain most offers. They know me and I know them.....so we are able to cut right to the chase so to speak. I would not generalize all dealers of course, but some, once they get to know you, will make you a fair deal.

Hello, The bullion market is super hot right now. You have the people selling there bullion because they are starting to realize that the world is not ending and we are never going to use gold coins again to buy groceries and then there are the people that are still buying bullion because they feel it is a safe investment. On the other side, I am selling a lot of "numismatic" gold. Like $2.5 and $3 gold pieces. Also, with the market recovering, I am starting to sell more of the "key date" coins from Lincoln cents and Mercury dimes although it is not what it was 5 years ago. Bottom line is, bullion is the hottest thing out there right now. With that said, you need to have some cash flow to get into that market. It never stops amazing me when a old man says, "I have a LITTLE gold that I would like to sell" and then he pulls out $20,000 worth of gold eagles.

It's amazing how most people have no idea what gold is worth. Astonishing and irresponsible.

Trends? Anything bullion related is hot, and collectors are choosy and specific when it comes to rare coins.
