I am debating weather to start a 7070. I have read a lot of threads and seen SO many pics of amazing 7070's. I guess I am a bit timid on starting one. Why? Money would be issue #1. My budget is constrained to $20-$100 on a good financial upswing. Being newly married, new house, single income (for now), all I can afford are g-VG coins, if I am going to look for the older ones. I am picky. If I do start a 7070 I would love to have coins that are >XF, now we are getting pricey. Part of me however would love to have a complete 7070 even in G-VG, just to say I completed one. If anyone would love to donate to this, THAT WOULD BE MUCH OBLIGED. I feel terrible asking for handouts, but know that they will be going to a safe home: the Dansco 7070. I know some of you have old barbers, CBH, etc just lying around. And I would even take a G-VG one. =D My birthday is coming up (April 29) and I told my wife that the 7070 album is on the top of the list. So I will most likely get it I look forward to hearing from all of you. I will be updating this thread for the next 50 years or so. SD Edited by SDcoinguy 03/20/2010 11:54 am

Be patient, My 7070 has been "incomplete" for over 30 years. I'm down to my last 8 slots.
Good luck.

yes be patient. This is not an album that you should have in mind of finishing within a year, even though it is possible to do if you are willing to just fill holes. I told myself that once a coin went into the album it was there forever but my taste changed with my knowledge so some of the coins I had in there were all of a sudden not good enough to stay so those were removed and upgraded. One good thing about that I guess is I got to give away the ones that I upgraded to fellow forum members. Just remember free coins do not come around very often and when they do it should be respected as something special that person just wanted to share with another to try and help them out. Some people think of their coins as part of the family and just can't seem to let them move on to anyone else no matter how much they know they will be taken care of

I started my 7070 a few months after I started coming to CCF(Feb '07); I still have 24 holes to go. There are over 40 coins in my 7070 that cost less than $35 so I know that progress can be made on a small budget.
I had high hopes that I would be farther along by now but I'm still enjoying the journey. As far as I'm concerned that's what is important.

When you say your budget is $20-100, is that per month? Because I think you can do a nice 7070 over 3-4 years with that kind of money.
My coin budget is $50 a month plus probably another $250 or so per year from Christmas/Birthday gifts. Although I had a few coins to get my 7070 started (mostly the cheaper ones), I have been able to nearly complete my 7070 which I started in 2006. It is a VF/XF set with many coins XF or better.
I have made some compromises (my Draped Bust and Classic Head large cents are VG for example), but you can always upgrade later.
The key is patience. Sometimes you have to wait for the right coin to come along. Start with some of the easier ones. Decide on the grade. G-VG is a fine goal if you will be happy with it when it is done. But don't settle either.
Best of luck in whatever you decide!

I started a 7070 a few months ago. Started by using some coins that I already had, nothing really outstanding and most will be upgraded later. I have added a few nice coins and some of the easier/cheaper coins. I have no grand ideas of finishing it anytime soon, probably not in the next few years but it is fun. I have to many other projects that I am working on, however, I always have an eye out for a hole filler. My advice-go for it.

i would say my weeekly budget is $10-15. I havent gotten to monthly just yet. Again, I have just started collecting this past January. I inherited my grandparents old whitman folders. so I have quite a bit to go off of. the only coins that I have purchased are a few mercs. other than that I roll hunt, b/c its cheap. so I havent actually purchased a coin over $2. =D I am hoping that a budget like mine, I will be able to afford some of the cheaper coins in decent conditions.

$10 weekly = $40 a month. With that budget, you could possible get a lot of coins! On my $20 budget, I get around 2 or 3 coins!

My friend. Focus. At $10/week you can achieve MIRACLES. Just remain FOCUSED.
Avoid junk, crap, AG/FR-2 stuff. Wait, save and you will be rewarded.
I've been collecting for years and I am always attracted to the pieces that I saved up for and hunted down. My "fantasy" pieces and spur of the moment purchases sicken me.

patience is key, I agree completely. my local coin ship has some nice deals. I went in to buy $15 of mercs (11) and he told me to pay him when I get the chance. he gives me discounts and deals all the time. I think I will save up and get some nice pieces like you mentioned. I want to avoid spur of the moment and take my time with this. upgrade slowly, etc.

would my budget allow me to get AU coins as well?

im also reading a lot about putting a 7070 together. a lot of people crack open slabbed coins and in most cases, lose value. I don't have any slabbed coins, and I don't intend to at the moment. my objective is to assemble a raw 7070 with decent grade coins. vf,xf,AU, no proofs, well maybe with some modern commemorative coins. I guess, I would ask, what are the benefits of assembling a 7070? would the album hold its value in years to come, even with out the coins being graded? am I going to set myself up for a loss or de-valument b/c I am not going to put in graded coins?

IMO, it looks better in the 7070. You might lose value, but I don't know about that. Also, I think I am going to start with all EF - its not that expensive and still looks really nice. As for your AU question, I think you *might* be able to pick up a Lincoln Memorial cent in BU for $10 ;)
