I've had the 96 for quite some time. I put it on in the past and it was written off as die shift or cracked die or something of that nature. But, yesterday, I ran across the 96D with nearly the identical issue behind the ear.same size-shape-and location.
then, this morning, I picked up some coins of thedesk for the scrap pile, this 98 turned up having the same design-size, and location as the other two.Only NOT as deep or pronounced.
There is something amuck here.anyone ever seen or heard of this thing before? ? ?

They look like die cracks to me!

I think it's just coincidental that they look similar and are in the same place. Maybe those are popular stress points. I have seen many coins with similar die cracks in similar places, like the top corners of the memorial, the bottom corners of the memorial, and all over Lincoln's head and forehead.

Thats what it seems like, and I have seen the types you mentioned. but all in the center of the coin, the angle of the line leaving downward at the bottom are all the same. I don't see how a die crack could be only in the center with an 'Island' in the middle of it. Too coincedental I think, but a few mor opinions on this would be cool

It's actually very simple. That's a common stress point on the Lincoln Cent, so they cracked in similar manners. The 1995 Doubled Die also has a similar crack in later die state. I don't see the mystery.
