The coin itself is from Vichy France, or the southern part of France that was basically a puppet government of Nazi Germany after they surrendered. After that, the French Free Forces under D. Gaulle went to the north to form a resistance against the Nazi puppet government. They adopted the Cross of Lorriane as their symbol, and apparently they stamped it on this coin (issued under non-Vichy France) as a kind of propaganda.
Wow thats interesting. Thanks for clarifying what the marks were. I was wondering if they were chop marks but I thought the coin was to modern to be chop marks.
