I found another one from mom's stash. This 1941 has a slanted 1. I thought it may have been a 1947 with an incomplete 7, but on comparing it, the location is different. What could cause this ?

Date-Error-?

The 1 looks like it was dislodged (and mashed/pushed sideways) during circulation. I see the original seating profile and position of the 1. Copper is a very soft metal.

Pretty neat, just wondered how the 1 kept it's original shape of it was pushed across the coin ? Heated maybe ?

Next question is, should I put it up on ebay ? LOL
Rest in Peace

The 1 was damaged from a machine that rolls coins into the shotgun type rolls. This coin was on the end and as the machine rolls down the end of the paper it can mark the end coins. In this case as it pushed over the 1 making it appear to lean. The damage has since toned over. Since it is damage it actually decreases the value of the coin. In the case of a common date Wheat cent the hit to your pocket is small.

Well, I tried to cause a 1 to roll over on other cents. The problem I have when moving it over is that the metal rises slightly. I got it to flatten out, but that left a wrinkle in the copper on the inside edge. Playing with about 1/2 dozen pennies, I couldn't get the "1" to maintain the proper width and height without putting a crease in the metal.

I suppose you guys are correct, but I wasn't able to duplicate the displacement with cold metal.

Thanks

Westnlas, you can't do the "zincoln" cents that way. They are clad, where the wheats are all solid.
I wonder what you have in mind?.

Zincolns are plated zinc. Not clad.
