In case no one has tried this, here are my findings:

-- By far the most common dates are 1971, 1976, and 2000. I picked up my $500 box in California, so about 90% of the coins in all dates were from the Denver mint.

-- 2 Franklin half culls, badly burned
-- 2 1964 Kennedy 90% silver halves
-- 26 1965 - 1968 40% silver halves
-- 1972 and 1974 S-proofs !!! How the heck did these get in there?

It was a very fun experience. Each roll was like opening a christmas present. Finding the proofs was just awesome. They were slight blemishes on them due to having been circulated. I'm guessing some kid probably raided dad's coin collection.

The Franklin half dollars were a surprise. Seeing as how badly damaged they were, I'm guessing no one really bothered to pull them out of circulation. But silver is silver, and now they're mine!

I'm actually thinking about doing this again. I got over a roll's worth of the 40% silver halves, and for a collector, that's pretty nice.

Aren't you getting the words 'collector' and 'accumulater' mixed up?

It could be collecting by some definition, or hoarding by others.

Need is a very relative term by any standard. I don't need a single coin, and neither do you.
And yes, I do collect (or hoard) halves, as well as every other denomination of US coinage.

One of my goals, which I'm doing quite well on completing, is to get a full roll of every relatively commonly circulated coin out there. For quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies, I'm almost complete, and am now replacing the circulated ones with the better BU ones I find. Halves included.

I go through halves just to find the silver, and sell it off for coins that I want/need.

So buffaloboy...you consider "hoarding" to be wrong? Is that correct? If it weren't for "hoarded" collections over the years there would be few if any of certain coins available now. You are primarily collecting Buffalo nickels, if I recall correctly. Is that "hoarding" of a particular coin. Do you really need them? What is your definition of "need"? Would a Coin Museum fall into your description of "hoarding".

Here are the definitions from the forum Glossary for you to peruse.

HOARD
A group of coins held for either numismatic or monetary reasons. A numismatic hoard example would be the hoard of Little Orphan Annie dimes (1844). A monetary hoard example would be the 100,000 plus coins in the Economite, Pennsylvania hoard of the nineteen century. That hoard consisted mainly of half dollars.

HOARD COIN
A coin that exists, or existed, in a quantity held by an individual, organization, etc. Examples include Stone Mountain half dollars still held by the Daughters of the Confederacy, the superb group of 1857 quarters that surfaced in the 1970s, and so on.

HOARDER
An individual who amasses a quantity of a numismatic item(s).

I sort through a box of half dollars every couple of months when I am at home that it. I would do it more often but my credit union will only order them for me if I promise not to bring them back.
It takes about two months to dump $500 in halves throughout the Houston area. Tips small purchases etc.
on average I will get 10-15 40% 3 or 4 90% every once in a while a Franklin or WL. I often get proofs. So far no 1970's or 87s

I get my halves at one bank, and reroll them up and return them to another. That way, I can get as many halves as I want and nobody gets annoyed with me. As for 1964 nickels, there were over 2 billion made, p and d mints combined, so they are really common.
