I have come across a multitude of coins in an old safe that used to be my grand fathers. It consists of Morgan silver dollars, Peace dollars, Eisenhower dollars, mercury head dimes, Buffalo nickels some standing liberty dimes ect.., I dont even know where to start when it comes to grading them locations of mint marks storing them or cleaning them. So I guess my question is where to start. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Rule #1! NEVER CLEAN THEM!! THAT INCLUDES POLISHING!! I can't tell you how many coins I've destroy by rubbing them, seeing hairlines, and rubbing them more. A good place to start is by getting a Red Book (not the Women's magazine but the Book of US coins.) 2011 vers should be coming out soon, but there's not much difference between the years if you're only considering old coins. Other than that, stick around and we'll be able to help you with any questions.:D

We'll need pics to make sure, but they're either PVC, tarnish or toning. If it's PVC, you can clean it with acetone (pure!). But if it's toning, and particularly attractive toning, then it could make your coin much more desirable.
Again, post pics of the coins to see if it's PVC contamination toning.

PVC is one of the few reasons to clean a coin, and then there is a specific way to do it to cause as little chance of damage as possible.

After studying the Red Book, you will end up keeping them especially the silver. But the best action would be to determine if you have any "key dates." Key dates are what dealers are always looking for, everything else is considered common. If you decide to start a collection, focus on what you want out of the effort. Join a local coin club too!

Contrats sounds like you're hooked on collecting! The Red Book you need to look/ask for is "A Guide Book of United States coins" by R.S. Yeoman. Read it cover to cover and you'll be off to a great start.
