I found this one roll searching today. It appears to be the word "LIBERTY" stamped acrosse Lincoln's cheek. What would cause this? What would you classify this as?

Looks like a vise job to me. Someone took another cent, put it on top of this one, stuck it in a vise and gave it a squeeze, pressing the letters of LIBERTY into Abe's face. You can get the same effect by stacking up a couple cents and hitting them with a hammer.

But the word "LIBERTY" would be a mirror image of itself, no? This word is not mirrored. It reads LIBERTY.

If it's post-mint modified, it's a pretty magical modification. The "T" looks raised to me.

I am with j h s, the image looks raised and a die clash would be incused. Plus, a die clash of Liberty would not hit his cheek. I do not know how you would do this, with out a lot of effort for nothing, outside of the mint. I hope Chuck et al show, I am flummoxed.

It really has me puzzled as well. Whatever caused this, it sure makes for interesting conversation.

Actually this is just a case of delamination of the planchet that happens to appear to form some letters. Imagination is doing the rest.

These are most often called "lamination" and left at that. Look carefully and you can see the effect continue to the back of the head.

Yes, it resembles bad plastic surgery.. I see this on newer coins. Not usually on older ones like this one.
