Ever since I decided to extend my collection I've been digging out things I bought years ago and never looked at so I can get rid of stuff I don't want and get stuff I do want. I've had these boxes for three years and never bothered opening them so if I sound surprised it's because I am. I just dug out 3 complete sets of Montreal Olympics 5 and 10 dollar 28 coin BU sets (not proof sets). The immediate problem I can see with the sets is all the Type 1 (there are seven subsets comprised of four coins each) sets are damaged environmentally because some dumb...uh unwise person removed them from their capsules and wrapped them in yellow dyed toilet paper. Seriously. (see picture for damaged coins - some turned yellow and some turned BLUE) Should I buy three uncirculated four coin series 1 sets and complete the entire sets and then sell them, sell them as they are or send the whole lot off to melt? I mean there's 14 each of the ten dollar coins and 14 each of the five dollar coins times three. Is there any demand for these? I recall distinctly there was almost no demand in the mid 70's. For melt value one well known bid is $23.53 on the ten dollar and $11.76 on the five dollar coins. So I have 42 $10 and 42 $5... $1482.18. Their ask is 28.99 and 14.50 respectively. Roughly 90 dollars to buy a type 1 set at the ask. A little lower if I am patient and snipe the auctions but I prefer not to spend my time with that. Edited by Ugly 04/23/2010 2:48 pm

Makes for some interesting toning.Don't believe I've read that toning process in the books.

I like the tablecloth too. If you're not an entomologist, you should be.

Yeah she just loves that moniker. I'm not sure, if they were proof coins I might complete the sets but since they are the uncirculated versions and I've had a chance to review sell prices, I will actually realize the most dollars as a melt sale with the least hassle. That's enough dollars to get me some nice fifty cent pieces etc.. Sad when there's no coin value in a coin... are you listening RCM? You are making garbage and minting too many of the few nice ones you do make.
