Is this anything more then a over abraded die on IGWT? First pix is the coin in question. The lettering is much thinner. Thanks all,John1

I believe that die is under hubbed...not over abraded. Either way it's relatively common, just the cause (thus its name) is different.

The thinning of the letters was caused by intentional die abrasion. If it was a case of weak hubbing all of the peripheral letters would be equally affected. As you can see, it's just GOD that's affected.

Does the spacing between the letters and the rim being wider change your opinions any?

The area that looks like extra space is just thinned devices. The more the field is removed, the shallower the devices. The field and device areas are starting to join together making a thinning of the letters.

Well, it's not just thinned devices, but also that the rim has been moved outward due to the abrasion.

And I agree with Mike...I have seen cases of weak hubbing before and they do look similar...but the fact that the raised field is in a smaller area signifies that this is abrasion. I stand corrected.

By the way, Chuck, do you have any good examples of weak hubbing I can use to illustrate the phenomenon for the readers of Coin World? You are pretty much the only person I've encountered who has much experience with this matter. You can reach me at mdia1@aol.com.

Mike, Am I going to get credit for bringing up this subject in your Coin World article?
