With the help of Bryan 1315, I have just discovered that the 1882-O in my Morgan collection is actually an 1882O/S VAM#4. Morgans are not my specialty by any means, so I am asking for a little help on the grade here. I know what I wish it is, but I have I a better idea of what it actually is. I would just like a few more opinions please.

The line going through the M of UNUM is just a stray piece of lint from the velvet that I use as an undercloth.

OK. Morgans are tough to grade from pics, and New Orleans Morgans are especially tough, because they're known for weakness of strike (it's not actually a weak strike, but that's a whole 'nother thread....). This one could be a really good AU, or an MS coin. The obverse pic is a little "busy" with light to determine what the cheek or the fields actually look like.

In other words, I'm waffling based on the fact that it's darn difficult to accurately grade based on pics.

I'll give you two answers: Either it's a strong AU55/58, or MS63 (maybe 64 if the pic is deceptively cluttered). If I had to choose, based on a few hints, I'd call it a 63.

I hate to say it, but the obverse looks like it has been cleaned to me. There's some hazing that might be cleaning residue. I've seen a lot of Morgans with this same residue.

I'd say AU55.
