Does anyone have one of these? I think it's an attractive coin, but I am having a really hard time finding one for a reasonable price. The other years can be found for about 2/3 of mint issue price, but anyone selling the 2006 wants $500+, which is about 25% over original cost. It's frustrating when dealers will sit on an inventory of these because they refuse to sell at a price the market is willing to pay. Edited by 1cent 05/03/2010 8:18 pm

Hello 1cent, The 2006 has a 22k gold ring and 4k inner core while others have 4k ring and 22k core. The end result is a heavier 2006 coin (14.02g) compared with the 1996 for instance (11.40g). Thus, more gold content for the 2006 coin. Mintage may also partly explains the price level. Only 2068 were minted in 2006, according to Charlton. And... (yes I can say) the coin is absolutely stunning. That may also play a role too.

That is a really nice picture, CC, thanks for posting it.
I guess I'll hold out a little longer and see if one pops up for sale a little cheaper, but maybe this is one of those items you just aren't going to get the usual "mint depreciation" on. The rapid rise in the price of gold isn't helping either.

Thanks guys. I didn't mention it in the original post, but it was also the last coin missing from my $2 gold set, so I am very happy indeed!

It's nice to have a conclusion to this thread. I got the four different gold $2 together for a picture (a fairly bad one, unfortunately). I like how the reverse of each year is different (well, technically the '96 and '06 are the same, but you can tell which is which instantly because of one having the 22k inner, and the other a 22k outer). Total price excluding shipping/taxes was 78% of mint price to assemble the set. It's pretty hard to go wrong at that price! Edit: slightly better picture, but I'm finding it really hard to take a picture of these because they are so reflective.
