I gathered enough cash to exceed the $1500 California sales tax exemption limit so I took a drive to visit the Fresno Coin Gallery (nice shop, great staff, fair prices!). I was looking for generic classic US gold coins with decent eye appeal. I picked up one eagle and three half eagles, including this one. I have my opinion on grade; anyone want to share theirs?

I'd venture an AU55. Looks to have great luster!

That is a beautiful coin !!
Too bad about all the scratches which, in my opinion, are the only thing that keep this coin from MS 62/3.
j_h_s mental thoughts:
would I rather have a coin graded MS63 damaged? should there be a DC grade? (definitely circulated...no abouts about it !!)

Will sell for around 370.I just sold a 09 that truly had less wear and no scratches for that. I paid 10 bucks for insurance too.I hope you didn't pay 1500 bucks for this beauty jaobler

A bit over $1500, actually; I needed a combination that met or exceeded that amount to dodge the sales tax man. I also purchased 1894 and 1901-S half eagles and an 1881-S eagle, all in AU or so, with no serious marks. I think the deal was fair and they had a pretty good inventory so I was able to pick some attractive choices.
I'll post the other coins when I have a chance.

gold coins are typically softer on details and easily scratched....my bet is MS-61

I don't want to be a downer, and I'm no expert on these, but I'm going with EF-45.

Thanks for all the comments. I see slight rub over the eagle's shoulder which is typically the first place that shows wear for this design type. That ornamental thingee over the Indian's ear and the lowest feather in the headdress have lost some detail in their centers. Luster is present but definitely subdued in the open areas of the fields. I'm calling it AU-55, with perhaps a stronger-than-normal strike and relatively few marks.

I give it an AU-53. The "scratches" in the fields are very common on these incused coins. Certainly looks original. There is quite enough rub on the eagles wing. Another nice coin.
