It is a part of a clash.

It is raised when it is a clash, but just a little. The jaw is in that area. If it is real tall, it could be a start of a chip. But from what I can see, it appears to be a clashed area.

Coop, help me with this, please. I do not pay any attention to die clashes and am weak here. It would seem that when two dies strike each other, the devise that is transferred to the opposite die would be raised on the die since the devise is a neg. image or incused. So, the transferred image being raised should transfer an incused image to the coin. This seems to make sense.

Thx in advance for your help.

The fields are what touch each other as it is the outside of the die. The devices outlines are what may be seen during a clash. The area will be raised, but slightly enough to note the area.

Sometimes you note a doubled line on a clash. The clash happens and bounces more more metal on opposite die.

First, Richard, thank you for all the help. The time you have put into the pics for teaching is truly amazing. As expected, I have learned a lot.

Second, is that your nickel? That clash is wild. I think I would have even seen that one. lol

First: The coin isn't mine. I edited his images and he liked the overlay to show what we were looking at and asked for the file for the obverse and reverse. Truly a valuable coin though.
Second: The images I use are some my own and others posted here on the different sites I frequent. I try to put the images credit on them, but sometimes I miss. A lot of time I forget to add credit for the image for my own. It is the educational purpose for this collection. Easier to see than to try to describe. Thanks for your comments Jim1953. Looking forward to using your images when they become available.
