Just need confirmation. Is this a Japanese 500 yen? It has regnal year 21 which would make it 2009 but there is number 20 (in japanese) at between 12 and 1 o'clock which is confusing me. Can anyone clarify?

How'd you get this so quickly... and circulated?

It's a commemorative 500 yen for Akihito's 20th year on the throne. But, as the calendar starts at year 1 instead of 0, it is Heisei 21.

... so how'd you get it? I thought these were only supposed to be in mint packages!

I second that... BTW these coins are already in circulation in Japan and on the market in other countries... Check this for example:

Just a straight forward circulated coin. Just noticed the edge. The standard 500 yen coin has 'slanted reeding' (first pic) whereas the commemmorative 2009 has slanted reeding that gradually gets thicker then back to narrow. This happens 4 times around the coin.
Sorry for the poor quality but my camera is useless as a microscope so it had to be scans.
