I was going through some rolls today and separated about 40-1975 D's. One look different, so I set aside and in a couple of m inutes found another one. There were 4 of them that all looked the same to me.

There is a blank spot along the front line of Lincoln's coat.

I cannot post a pic today, but are there more than one variety ? I cannot find any info anywhere.

Thanks

Die polishing can remove devices next to field. Sometimes the back of the neck is missing. Sometimes the throat area is affected. Sometimes the roof or the edge of the roof can be missing. Polishing removes the mid devices in these area to cover a die clash. Beings these are just part of a normal coin opperation, it is neither an error or a variety. The die started off normal ruling out a variety.

I have found a couple of 74 Ds where it looks like someone poured copper around Lincoln, partially submerging the bust. Very interesting coins.

StJoeBlues, it sounds like you are describing Cuds, and they are worth something. We'd like to see those, too!

Scooby - definitely not Cuds. I've posted a few of those that I've found. This is different. It's like the field surrounding the bust of Lincoln is rising and covering the lowest spots of Lincoln. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow.

That's die polishing, and it's rather common in the 1970s.

I keep this one in my Whitman because I love how the polishing changed things, especially Lincoln's hair. Makes it look like he just walked inside on a windy day with a cowlick sticking up.

Looks like a gouge or die dent in that area above the head. The other areas are affected by heavy die cleanings. Note the jaw. Creating the dis-shoveled look on the hair.
