Are the small & large mint marks confined to Lincoln pennies?

I have some 1970D Dimes, and with my untrained & very worn out eyes, I can see at least 2 different positions & sizes of the D, possibly even 3.

I trawled through about 30 - 40 pages of threads trying to find some info, but everything that I found referred to Lincolns.

Please let me know if this is common or where I can obtain more info.

I think the only recognized varieties of sizes of mint marks are confined to Lincolns. Keep in mind that before the 1980s, all mint marks were applied by hand, so there's at least a difference in where the MM is placed. As for the size, I think they're mostly uniform (I'm looking at 1960s, 1970s dimes in my change).

More members will have a definite answer. I'm supposed to be studying for finals but... :/

The date is what is considered the large/small dates. The mint marks can vary from the way the punch was used on the dies. Some wider/deeper/taller all caused by the punch operator. Just depends on how punchy here was that day. LOL

In dimes, the 1945 micro-S comes to mind...

... but what about 1970? Nancy has an interesting observtion, if true.

I checked CONECA's varietyvista site and there's nothing on Roosevelt mintmarks. I suspect that site -- devoted to minute detail in design/mm changes -- would have listed anything known on the dime's mintmark.

Also, there are several large/small mintmark varieties outside of the cent.

For dimes, my records show 1905-O, 1928-S, 1934-D, 1941-S, 1942-S, 1945-S as having large/small mintmark varieties.

I'd bet Roosevelt's are the least popular series (series from the last 100 years) among collectors. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Yeah, true. But those CONECA people seem *very* thorough!

There are several mint mark variations in Mercury dimes. The micro S, the trumpet tail S the inverted S, etc. The Fivaz-Stanton catalogue of die varieties and errors shows 2 DDR (Double Die Reverse) for the 1970 D Roosevelt. I do not have CherryPickers' Guide Vol II which would have pics of these die varieties. It may be possible the mint mark shows doubling or possibly Machine Doubling.

Sometimes a mint mark will change appearance as the result of post mint damage. Flattening of the metal can give it a thicker look for example. Sometimes it can be struck by another coin and distort the mark.

Sorry, I do not have more information. Can you post a pic of the coin ?

Sorry, no, I wish I could. It usually takes me about 3 days to get a half decent picture out of my camera. Nothing wrong with the camera, it's the operator that's not much chop! Shaky hands, blurry vision. All the really good things that come with advancing age.

I do have a scanner, about 4 yrs old, but almost brand new, I don't know how to use it either. Maybe one day my son will have the time to give me some tuition on using it.

nancyc, I picked up a real cheap copy stand. They work great!

Just mount it to the stand, focus on the coin, and set the timer. I can try to find the link to show you what I got. You probably wouldn't want to order this exact one because of the postage involved from Texas, but it would give you a good idea on what to look for locally.

I do ok on the full coin shots, but when I'm in macro I have a hard time keeping steady and the copy stand works perfect!
