The 20-D is known for miserable strikes. While this one is weakly struck its really not that bad for this issue. There doesn't appear to be very much wear on this coin.

VF35 and possible XF. Part of me thinks this is an XF coin. I will be interested to hear what some of the other members have to say.

Sorry for the lousy pictures, they even look worse now than they did when I took them. I will try to post better ones tonight.

Clearer pics will help greatly. JimR is dead on about the condition of these dies. The branch mints were having a hard time turning out high quality cents in the late teens and early 20s. I do not see a lot going on in the fields. There is some wear on the check but the ear is all there. I think there is a chance this coin goes AU, XF for sure.

I think it might be XF (or better?), too.

Duke, try to take the picture as straight on as possible...this will help you get the entire coin in focus.

That's a pretty nice 20-D, softly struck, dies probably too far apart.

It's obvious to me the die had difficulty striking this coin.

The bulge/waviness in the east obverse field is interesting -- unless it's toning that's tricking my eye.
Is that an indent near the L in LIBERTY?

For this coin, I'd dare go into AU because the type of wear I see on a very weakly-struck cent I cannot attribute to circulation.

But for the few dings on the reverse rim and whatever that mark is by the "L" I'd easily go AU.

Right now, I'm daring to go there.

:P

Nope, just an optical illusion. It was advertised as an AU but I paid XF money for it. It's a nice looking coin in hand with a very weak strike. I originally thought I would grade it XF45, but I think I going to lean toward AU50. There is a slight little nick near the L in liberty, but overall it's a good looking coin.
