Yesterday I walked in to my local convenience store and the clerk, knowing I always ask her for half dollars, pulls out a 1972 S Kennedy half dollar and told me some guy pulls it out of a coin case to buy cigarettes. Is this considered circulated now?

Nope, proof will always be proofs. Proofs that have been passed in circulation will be considered impaired (proof), but still proof.

....."Proof" is the "way" in which it was made.......not a "condition". So yeah....it'll ALWAYS be a Proof....... what condition the Proof coin is in, and what grade it would get..... there's the potential "value".

That amount of circulation does not necessarily make that an impaired proof. Did it get banged up?

It never ceases to amaze me when people buy cigarettes and alcohol with collectible coinage. My son works at a drive-thur and bought me home an ASE a few weeks ago....some guy used it with a $5 bill to cover a pack of smokes. LOL

isn't it awesome. My brother walked into a Bof A 4 months ago to the teller and she had a bag of 180 1964-1969 Kennedy halves he used to pay part of his mortgage. So sad but my brother scored when he saw it and asked the teller for Kennedy halves. There was only 6 1964's but what a score. all 40% silver. Melt down is over $600 today.

The ding on the right side of the obverse will probably not grade high. But I'm happy with find. I just asked the clerk and she showed me this. God I love Coins. Almost better than se....
