I really have a hard time grading these. What are your thoughts?

Finding that coin in AU or EF is impressive. This coin was so easy to loose and was melted down during the Civil War.I have a 52 in good and because of the silver content it's rare to even find it. Good catch mate.
Rest in Peace

Noticable wear, but twinges of luster. I agree with halfwitty, EF/AU or somewhere around that.

Three Cent Piece (Trime) Silver General Grading Standards

G4 Good - Star worn smooth. Legend and date readable.

VG8 Very Good - Outline of shield defined. Legend and date clear.

F12 Fine - Only star points worn smooth.

VF20 Very Fine - Only partial wear on star ridges.

EF40 Extremely Fine - Ridges on star points show.

AU50 About Uncirculated - Star shows trace of wear at each point. Center of shield may be weak.

MS60 Uncirculated - No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 Select Uncirculated - Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired.

Given the above guidance and the nice shape of the obverse shield and the reverse stars, I'll go with an EF45.
Rest in Peace
