Problem with this question is people my age. When I was a kid there was no Roosevelt dimes yet. Washington quarters were still new. Even Sitting Liberty coins were common. I remember my Dad complaining about how many people still want to spend those lousy oversized pennies from the past. All Mercury dimes looked new since they were or mostly so. So oldest coin found in change? Don't remember but any coin with the first two numbers being 18 were just to common.

The oldest coins I ever found were when I was living in Canada, a couple of 5 cent coins from the 1920s. Here in Australia we reformed our currency in 1966, so finding coins older than this is almost unheard of today, but I once found a sixpence from 1957.

i'd have to look back and check , anything older that mid 60s goes to the side, always has (for as long as I can remember)
last week I was in Virginia on vacation, pulled my change out one night, I had a 1942 AND a 1945 nickel

My oldest is an AU 1906 Indian Head cent. (My best though) I work at a convenience store and a customer once paid me in 5 1921 Morgans, and 1 1923 Peace dollar. Separate times, but needless to say I bought those out of my till for 6 bucks . Adam

Hey, rkp, my oldest found coin is a 1901 Indian Head cent, too! This one was found roll-searching. I came across a 1924 cent last year going through my neighbor's change jar (with permission, of course). I don't really count found-in-roll coins or change-jar coins as "in circulation", though.

I got this in some change at a Walden Book Store in our Mall a couple of years ago. This is what inspired me to start my Mercury dime collection.

Quote:This is what inspired me to start my Mercury dime collection. That is what I love to hear! When I first started filling folders in 1980, I never thought I would find silver in change so I only collected clad coins. My outlook changed when I received a 1964 dime at lunch later that year.

Here in Euroland the oldest coins are minted in 1998, but because euro wasn't legal tender yet at that time, those coins are dated 2002 - the official year of introduction of the euro coins and notes. The oldest date in euro coins is 1999 - the year when euro introduced in non-physical form (e-transfers etc.). Sometimes you can get older coins too - like Thailand bi-metal 10 baht coins from 1990's instead of almost same sized 2 euro coins (value of 0,20 euro vs. 2 euro)
