That was the headline in the email I received this evening. I almost deleted the mail before reading it, but curiousity got the better of me. Luckily the young man that wrote this email to me, started his collection last year after attending one of our "coins in the classroom" programs held at the Kid's Fest event.

This young man started by thanking me for my time and efforts to get kids to join in on the collecting. He is now 12 years old and has finished his very first collecting goal.

He first apologized for not knowing his grades yet, but has a birthday coming up and has asked for a Photograde book, and believes that he will receive one. His parents are helping with his collection.

His current collection is as follows. One of each:

1. Indian cent. 1899
2. Lincoln Cent 1918
3. Shield nickel 1868
4. Liberty nickel 1903
5. Buffalo nickel 1913
6. Jefferson nickel 1943
7. Barber dime 1900
8. Mercury dime 1945
9. Roosevelt dime 1962
10. Up to date State Quarter Collection. All handpicked from change.

What amazed me was the following insert from his father.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear sir;

I wanted to add a personal thank you to this email. My son has been bugging his mother and I since the Kid's Fest this past summer to look at all of our change. We can no quicker get inside the house before our son is asking to see our coins. His interest has sparked into other areas including math and history. He wants to receive coin books for his upcoming birthday. He still has the book list that you passed out in your brochures. His current collection has been solely financed with funds raised by his chores. He volunteers throughout the neighborhood for payments of coins. His grades this year have also improved as we guaranteed the latest State Quarter for any grades of A or B. Your program is the best that we could have hoped for. It has given our son inspiration. He hopes that when he grows up to work for your firm and teach others about the neat coins you show to kids. He learned that you will be bringing your coins to his school after the break. He is excited to show you his latest purchases. He studies his coins daily and has learned to put them in the cardboard holders that you provided the group. Thank you so much for the work that you do for these kids. If we may make a donation to your cause, please let us know. You and your staff have a gift and it should be shared with the world.

Sincerely,

(edited to remove name)

After reading the email I can honestly state that this little guy has put together the most perfect collection.

Some days I wonder if the efforts are making a difference. If the long hours make a difference. If the knowledge shared is taken to heart. Then, every so often I get a handwritten letter or email from a young collector and it all seems to be worth every minute and more.
I know that a few of you have taken the time to learn from what I offer, and even TEACH me a few things and I wanted each and everyone of you to know that I appreciate it. Sometimes we overlook the ones closest to us. So from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU one and all.

It's nice to know you have done some good, isn't it ND?

Kind of makes a guy want to go out and do a little more of the same!

Give yourself a pat of the back, you have earned it.

This is really a neat story and it does indeed prove there is more to life than money! The little things are very rewarding and most just happen without any intentional doings.
Years ago I was involved with a 4-H Entomology project in my county. I am crazy about bugs and have been all my life so I was a natural with the project. Our group only lasted a couple of years and it was history. It was years after that, at our annual 4-H county fair, that a young man walked up to me and asked if I remembered him? Quite honestly I didn't have a clue until he introduced himself to me and then I remembered that 10 year old kid in our entomology club. He stated he had looked for me, every year at the fair, in hopes of thanking me for the part I played in his life and then quoted some of the things I had told the club years earlier, word for word. He told me "I had given him and his brother a life they could only dream about as they both went on to college and received their degrees in Entomology and now could work, live and see any part of the world they so desired. I was humbled by this young man and his remarks as I was only sharing something I learned to love when I was a small child in 4-H. Today he is a chief entomologist at Disney World in Florida so if yo are ever down there and notice there are no flies or bugs...well a kid from Indiana is taking care of those problems for Disney! I have always said if you just take the time to reach out and touch Mother Nature, perhaps she may just reach back! Guess it works with humans as well!

These two stories show the best part of human nature. I grew up in different enviroment that most "modern" folks, where this type of encouragement was the norm.
So I learned early in life that to keep it you have to give it away!!
