Great coin!

Is this the reason for selling your other half-dollar?

Looks like a very strong 61 for a good price. Any ideas as to why it's "not" graded higher?

P.S. The No Motto reverses look better to my eyes than with Motto on this series.

Edit to add: "not"

Thanks guys.

David, actually that wasn't the reason I sold it. I had the 1874 just as a coin I bought because I liked it awhile ago. This new coin isn't for my type set either, I just looked on heritage and saw very few high end examples, so I figured it was quite scarce and wanted to pick it up for that reason (might trade or sell it in the future, though). A PCGS AU-58 went for $1250. I believe some of these better date Seated coins are scarcer in higher grades than the price guides indicate.

Theres a good chance that if its really clean for a 61, its a market graded slider. And I agree about the motto. But, we'll see. I sure hope it's undergraded, that would be even better.

Here is why the coin was graded MS-61, I think:

At first glance, it looks much higher grade, I would say MS-65 or possibly even better. The seller's photos did not do any justice to how clean the surfaces of this coin are. There are no significant contact marks, and none in the focal points whatsoever. However, upon close observation, some of the obverse has very light hairlines (mostly around the head). Either the coin was slid against something naturally, or it was very very gently wiped with a soft cloth. 95%+ of the original luster is intact, and the obverse is toned in a deep, radiant blue. It has a wonderful antique look to it, and I actually prefer it to the 'booming' type of luster. A 150 year old coin shouldn't look like it just got rolled off the press, in my opinion (the luster is rather subdued overall, its not a 'flashy' coin.)

My personal opinion is that this downgrade may have been a bit excessive. The hairlines are not noticeable with the naked eye, and the impairment is minimal at worst. I personally think the coin should have graded MS-63 at worst (unless there is some very light wear I am not seeing, but I don't believe so).

I would resubmit it personally. That is a fantastic looking coin! I also do not like blast white coins this old.
