Dont know what your budget is. If I were going shopping there and had the money I'd buy one or more of each: Primarily: anything that would complete or start a set I'm seriously or want to seriously start collecting Bag of Kennedy halves - much cheaper than buying two rolls at a time - no shipping handling - unsearched 2009 proof and unc sets...100 years of Honest Abe. Secondarily: Bag of circulating $1 coins based on number of errors for a particular issue - no additional cost: $250 for $250 of coins - no shipping handling - unsearched Bush and Clinton 3" medals. I wouldnt buy gold at that price

The San Francisco Mint does not do public tours so all you will be able to do is stare at the building from the outside. Now I think the Old San Francisco Mint is open again but I don't know if they have any numismatically related material there other than a small museum. I don't know if they has a gift shop there selling coins or not.

But you can still stare at the building, right?

Yeah, The Granite Lady will be a museum, but not slated to open until 2012. The new mint does not allow visitors.
Last month they did have a coin show at The Granite Lady, but they no longer do scheduled tours.

As the others said, you can't go inside. But SF is a great town and I'm sure you'll have a good time anyway!
Be sure to bring your jacket though. Most people from SoCal (and the rest of the country) don't understand how cool the weather is. Mark Twain said it best "The coldest winter I ever spent is a summer in San Francisco."
