Sap - Nice coin with all of the appearance of being real. Nice color - correct style and lettering - edge strike priority and normal dentils. I also really like the way the shield was done.
I have only one area of curiosity. It is a very shallow cut portrait which is not listed in Calbetto. It is possibly a new variety. I do not track all the various portraits of the Royalist coins because they tend to be unique for every die - and I do not collect Colonial 8R originals. So I can not be sure now often this portrait has appeared. But I am struck by the deeply set profile (outline) coupled with susch low relief detail. The facial features, hair lines and ear all seem to be all at one level. Most portraits of that period were deeply engraved so much so in the Royalists strikes that it is scarce to see a fully struck up portrait. The reverse situation seems to be the case here.
Several "new" varieties of Royalist coins have appeared on the market in the past couple years and more than one of them has had a similar low depth portrait. The odd thing is that there are no low relief portraits for any date of Royalist Mexican issues in Calbeto. Why so many are appearing after Calbeto is curious.
I am not yet actually suspicious of the low relief varieties, but I would like to know the weight and SG of this coin if possible? I want to preclude any chance of a forgery.
It is a working hypothesis that each Durango portrait was engraved individially until 1822 - there was no Durango King punch. This is unlike Zacatecas which had a King Punch at least by late 1820.
If every other factor checks out along with weight and SG - I would go with original, at least for now.
