I have a question on P D S mint marks(All denominations of coins)

Are you ready for this? I'm a Canadian and don't know a lot about
U.S. coins ,even though I do collect them.

Concerning the mint marks,I've noticed that it can be in different positions on a coin. What I mean is,take a 1988P dime for example.

The P mint mark can be -very close to the date
-far from the date
-or further to the left/right of the date
My question is " How does this come about? "

I hope you all understand what I'm asking. If need be I will post examples(photos) tomorrow.
Thanks to all who respond to this dumb question.

I know prior to 1990, the MM's on Lincoln Cents were applied to the die by hand therefore, they could have been anywhere. Same for the other coins I am assuming?

You will see them high, low, left, right, tilted, and even re-punched! Keep an eye out for those.

Just for kicks go to https://www.coppercoins.com, on the left hand side of the page you will see "die variety search", click that. In the search range, use 1960. Near the bottom - click on mint mark variety and have fun!

Yes, positioning differences are so common that they are not even considered varieties. The only ones worth saving would be a mintmark actually touching another device, those are tough to find. The hand punching of mintmarks did lead to the creation of varieties though, there are doubled or even tripled mintmarks called repunched mintmarks(RPMs) caused by a mint worker tapping the punch on the die two or three times instead of once. RPMs are very collectible and some of them can be worth quite a bit but even the most common ones have some nominal value.

As always, cool pics coop.

Do you have any where the mm is touching another device like bio is talking about? That's the first of heard of a mm overlapping a device, that would be cool to see.

I only collect RPMs and doubled dies. But I do have a RPM that is touching the date on some coins.
