Hello all,

I know this is a stupid question but I recently came across a few buffalos and have seen people talk about them as type 1 or type 2 based on the reverse... If someone could explain this to me I would apprecieate it

The difference is in the ground the buffalo is standing on. On Type 1, the whole bottom is raised and the Five Cents is sticking up more. On type 2, the ground is little more than a line and the Five Cents is on a recessed background. Check out the pictures. They're easy to tell apart even on really worn nickels.

OK, I have another questions. Was there a certain date when they switched from Type 1 to Type 2? Or did they produce both types at the same time?

The first year of mintage for the Buffalo nickel, 1913, started out with the Type 1 design but the Mint switched to the Type 2 design later in the same year. All Buffaloes after 1913 are of the Type 2 design.

Some of your dateless type 2's may have some value if they are D or S mint. Unfortunately the only way you can tell is if you apply nic-a-date to the obverse where the date is located.

Only your mintmarked coins will have better value unless of course you have a 1916/1916!
