As a child living in the Far East I collected and set aside some world coins ...... and tonight I pulled out the bag full of coins to take a first pass at what I have not seen for over 30 years.

Here is a photo of the pile on my desk ....

Great-Fun-.....-World-Coins-Discovery!

I know absolutely nothing about these coins .... but there are a LOT of interesting coins in this pile.

I'm not sure how to approach identifying and cataloging these ..... there are many countries represented .... but I suppose the Internet today can help identify some of them.

Here is one example from the pile ..... an 1866 Belgium 1 Fran ..... from the Internet I learned that this coin is 0.835 silver, the motto on the reverse reads "Unity makes Strength" and there were 3,041,000 minted. Also read KM-28.1 whatever that means?

Great-Fun-.....-World-Coins-Discovery!

Great-Fun-.....-World-Coins-Discovery!

There are a lot of countries represented in my pile of world coins ..... and it will take me forever to identify them.

Great fun ..... exploring the world coins from my childhood .....

I truly have no idea of rare versus ordinary in the pile ....... but will do my best to research and keep you all posted.

David

Wow, David, are you going to have fun!

It's a long time since I had a pile like that to go thriugh. I would first sort them into countries alpabetically then into denominations and then years.
For IDing them a good source for pictures is http://(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed / You can select the country and then at the bottom of the list you can select "Click here to view all"

That will give you the km# ref also (refers to the listing in the Standard Catalog of World Coins).

If there are any you're unsure about then post pics. Heck! Post pics anyway!

Happy sorting, Vic.

You have the French language coin, now find the corresponding Flemish language coin.

I'd like to see what you have. (I'd like to have a few foreign [non-american] coins [they don't have to be extremely old].

Wow ..... I would truly enjoy the story behind coins of the same denomination/year being made in the same country in two different languages! Please write back and fill in this gap.

BTW ..... does this mean my tentative ID of KM-28.1 is wrong for this version?

LOL ...... I don't have a CLUE about many (most) of the countries ...... yet alone the skills to read the languages to know denomination and years.

I'll take my best shot to sort out what I can and then deal with the rest.

Assuming you folks would be interested in some of these .... so I'll do what research I can and send along some photos in separate threads.

Hope you experts stay tuned and chime in!

KM 28.1 is correct for the French legend, The Flemish on is KM 29.1.
The majority of Belgian coins have versions in each of these two official languages.

I am envious of your nice pile of coins. I see some from a distance that I think are interesting. Where in the 'far east' were you located?

I would sort by the type of writing on each coin. Those using the English alphabet would be the easiest to identify (for me). Those are probably from Europe/Americas/Pacific. Next comes the Cyrillic alphabet, which is used in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Mongolia.

Then there are the Arabic coins of North Africa/Middle East, and coins with Asian writing. Starting out, I found these the most difficult to identify.

Don's World Coin Gallery is a great site to match pictures with.

A helpful hint which I wish I had known earlier: In google maps, if you go to a region of the world, you'll see the English name you're familiar with, along with the country's own name, as it often appears on coins. Unfortunately, it only contains current countries, and the world has changed a lot in 30+ years.

Japan and Taiwan from 1962 thru 1974 ..... with lots of family trips to other 'local' countries.

So far .... with your help .... I have cataloged 5 of these coins ..... with about 100+- to go.

KM-28.1: 1866 Belgian 1 Franc, 0.835 silver
Y-151: 1970 Russian Commemorative 100th Anniversary of Lenin's Birth, Cu-Ni-Zn
KM-12.1: French Indochina 1 Cent, date uncertain (1920 or 1930), Paris Mint, Bronze
KM-24.3: 1941 Occupied France 1 Cent, Zinc and corroded
KM-80: 1959 Greek 50 Lepta, Copper-Nickel

I am enjoying very much the personal replies to the various posts with special Joy on reading the links some of you have provided relative to the coin/era history.

Many Thanks for all the support so far .... many more coins to go through!

David
