I am working on my type set as I have been for the past year of so and am looking to add the 3 cent coins to the collection. I really like the look of the S3C's and will probably end up getting an example of each of the three types.
For the type ones I am looking to get a 51-O since it is the only mint mark of the series. The book values for this issue seem to be just a bit above the values for the 51-p and '52s. So one might think they were readily avaliable, but through my research I am finding quite the opposite may be true. I am finding it hard to locate decent looknig silver 3 cents. With 720,000 '51-o coins minted it is certainly a better date but not a key in the series.
Does anyone feel that the '51-o coins are undervalued in the books?
As for the other types of silver 3 cents and the 3CN coins what coins are in sleeper mode? or is the entire denomination exhibiting sleeper qualities?

I initially wanted an 1851-O for my type set as well but it turned out to be a difficult task. I eventually settled on an 1855 that I lucked into, a friend purchased a 1851-62 VF/EF 3CS collection so I got a very nice VF30 for VF ask money. The 1851-O was VF20 but he kept it for himself  Three years later, I still have not found an equivalent 1855 or even a similar 1851-O. Other thank those two coins, I think anything after 1862 tends to be undervalued compared to the true rarity of the business strikes. It is easier to find proofs in almost all cases. Unfortunately the whole series tends to be ignored except for type purposes so that would probably be the main reason for any perception of being undervalued. Edited by biokemist6

I believe that many dates in both series are way undervalued, and many sleepers.
But, the question is: Will they ever wake up?

Three Cent Silvers and Half Dimes seem to be sleeper series. I think that 3CS are undervalued, all in the series, and business strikes after 1862 should have a higher value. I, myself, am collecting 3CS, and may go for Proofs for 1863 to 1873 when I can afford it. There really aren't that many collectors of this series. So there is opportunity going around here. Even though there aren't really many collectors of this series, 3CS Collections are pretty tough to complete. Though a short series, there are quite a few rarities, and sometimes it is hard to find 3CS that aren't scratched, holed, bent, destroyed, worn, etc. As For Sleepers, I think some of the later dates would be good. The 1851-O Sounds like a good idea. 1859-1862 have relatively low mintages, when compared to earlier dates (Excluding the 1855).

Hard to find in good condition - hard to find at all, for that matter - hard to buy because they get scarfed the minute they appear on the market, and hard to find anywhere near any "book" price. Except the PCGS Price Guide, of course, which is as usual stupid high for this one. |

Check the mintages (228,000 and 162,000 respectively, both less than the 1916-D Mercury dime) and price guide values of the 1875 and 1876 3-cent nickels. They are far scarcer than the 1865 and 1866, but not much more expensive. |
