A co-worker of mine came to me the other day and said can you take a look at dime that I rec'd in change yesterday. She handed me a 1946 Roosevelt dime. She asked how much it was worth. I told her that although it is the first year of issue for that design it was not a rare coin. And given that it is well circulated it was only worth the silver content which at the time was about $1.30.

She asked me if I would sell it for her on ebay. I told her that with all the fees it would not be worth it, but I offered to buy it for $1.30 from her.

I think she thought I was trying to take her (like the dime was secretly more valuable), so she said, never mind I think I will keep it.

Now it is taped to her computer screen with scotch tape.

I bet that scotch tape "display" really sets that coin off nicely!

out of curiosity, why not just show her a Krause catalog to show you are not ripping her off. Of course you would now need to take into consideration the residue left behind...

Because, to someone who knows nothing about coins, then trying to describe what MS, AU, XF, VF, ETC. means and the different prices for each then becomes a headache.

i have about 15 Hispanic co-workers that I show my silver loot to occasionally, and tell them that its pretty easy to do. I tell them that if they go find me some silver dimes, I will give them $1 for every dime... now I just have to wait and see if they find any...

... and let her know that the scotch tape will eventually damage the coin further!

That's funny, but so true! At times I offer 10% below melt for junk silver, yep, they think I'm taking advantage. 50 years old+silver= big bucks to a novice. Until they visit their local dealer and reality slaps 'em in the face!

Boy, that story sure rings true. I have had that happen many times.
You be honest and tell them the true value of a coin and then they
figure you are tring to rip them off. It's human nature. Greed !
Next time, when you offer to buy, say i'll give you 8 times face value. That sounds great to them plus you make a little extra on the deal

I've had a similar sitaution arise with a half dollar. Once you tell someone that something is silver and it has a little bit of value they start growing umbilical cords and attaching themselves to it. At least it gets them collecting, I say. People are such fools for war items and silver.
