Well, I think I made a decision. LOL

In addition to the Kennedy half collection I am helping my daughter do, I think I will start a collection of 1 sample from every coin the US has made. LOL

I aim to spend no more than about 300 dollars on each coin and obtain them in conditions ranging from AU - MS65 depending on the price. There are some that I will have to settle for far lower grade and some that I just can not afford.

According to the price guide in the July issue of Coins Magazine there are about 70 coins that meet my criteria. I figure this will take some years to complete. LOL

Is it ok to post my list to get feed back? I have picked out specific years in some cases, maybe y'all would have some better ideas?

How much difference is there between the various MS grades? If I settle for a lower grade of MS I can save ALOT of money on some specimens.
Rest in Peace

Have you considered getting a DANSCO 7070 type set? It has most of the major types, though some of the earlier coins will set you back much more than $300 in the AU range, however it leaves out some of the ultra expensive ones (ie chain cent). This is a great goal, and a large undertaking; but I will tell you that type set collecting is the most enjoyable for me out of anything I have attempted numismatically. If I were you, I would define your parameters to be realistic towards your budget(whatever that is)...the Dansco 7070 is a great place to start.

edit: please post your list for feedback, though the beauty of a type set is that you can make it WHATEVER you want it to be. There really arent any rules or restrictions as to what it should be. The Dansco 7070 is a guide, but you can restrict it or take it further however you'd like.
Here is a link to my 7070 thread to see if this is kind of what you had in mind.

I started a "real" Kennedy half collection a couple months back or so. And what I mean by "real", is that I just seemed, in the past, to be satisfied with having a folder with some beat up Kennedys....a bunch of coin tubes....roll hunting for "circulated" Proofs or NIFC strikes.....etc. etc. etc. What amounted to be a "junk pile" of Kennedys !
Well, I made up my mind to get a Dansco with Proofs for these, and haven't looked back since ! I'm building it with Uncirculated Mint Sets, Proof Sets, and Silver Proof Sets..... This Set is a real STUNNER NOW !!......quite appealing I must say !
Buying those old Sets cheap and then filling up all kinds of other albums is the way to go Man ! ..... ...(fun too !) ...

And Yeah, I'd agree with Johnny about the 7070 Dansco "Type Set".....I have one too....but it's as full as I can get it without spending some serious Benjamin's....so....I'm at a "stop" standstill on that one.
But this would offer you the "Type Set" that you're wanting to build with your daughter.
You could even get some blank pages and make your own too.

Yea, what you're talking about is called a "type set". It sounds like you have a nice budget for it. You should be able to complete it fairly easily.

Just an FYI, in my experience, a lot of AU58s look better then MS60s. Looks like a good list, was wondering if you were going to add the 2010 penny?

Oops, the formating did not carry over very well from Excel.

I forgot to add the 2010. Thanks for the catch!

You should check this out. I'm doing something very similar, perhaps you would like using airtite albums also.

The Dansco is nice, but kinda rigid for what I am trying to put together. I do not intend to get all the small variations. At least not right now. LOL

I like the flexibility of the Airtites, I was also considering doing it all (mostly) in slabbed coins.

While slabbed would be nice, I prefer not to do it this way (except for your highly counterfeited coins) because you end up paying a premium on lots of coins for the holder they are in.

It also takes away from the fun of hand selecting each coin and having a reason you bought it, and grading it yourself. I've only bought three coins for my set so far, and each one has a fun little story/reason I bought it. Not just "it was a PCGS AU58, and thats what I was looking for, etc."

By all means though, if you are patient and only plan to buy excellent, well graded coins that you like, and want them slabbed for preservation sake... that is a great way to do it... The beauty of this hobby is there is no one way to do anything, and though we all have preferred ways of doing stuff, ultimately you decide how you want to do. and dont let anyone (like me) tell you otherwise. LOL
