Not sure how common these are but the seller on ebay had more than one for sale. Any LWC collectors have any ideas? This may be as close to the real thing as I can ever get.

They are exceedingly common and can be found on most the of the 1950s dates. It is caused by extensive die wear, not to be confused with a true doubled die.

I agree with Scooby Due

Common die Deteriorated 55 But the Die Cracks are Very Cool.
I have a roll of 57 LWC"s that have varying degrees of die cracking
in the head. I want to put together a couple of small sets showing
Die crack progression this winter.

Nice Die crack, always wondered how the die crack's in the middle first? It must shrink from the pressure?

actually it would be swelling from the heat and then contraction from cooling, the process takes the temper out of the die causing them to become brittle and crack from the pressure.

ah, but if the die was heated then it cools from the outside dia first would this cause the cracks? dont know just trying to figure it out in my head.

stewart, are you trying to put together the progression of the crack on the same die?

That would be really cool to see. I would love to see a sequence of the crack progression.

As already said, a "poor man" doubled die is not a doubled die at all. You can get closer to the real thing by getting a doubled die coin from another year, such as a 1995 DDO. One of those in mint-state is not very expensive. Not as dramatic as the 1955, but a doubled die, nonetheless.
