My question is in regards to lighting and magnification while searching those rolls. I recently picked up a lamp from Office Depot for a whopping $50 which included a magnifying ring with a fluorescent circular lamp. It did help to aid me along with glasses I wear. The fluorescent lamp worked okay so I thought until one day when I had a desk lamp with a halogen bulb and it seemed to make a big difference. Kind of bummed now with this big ole magnifying lamp that clamps to the table and another halogen desk lamp that also sits over an already cluttered coin work area.
Just wondering what type of lighting you prefer to do your searching with and do you use magnification to aid you in reading dates, mint marks and perhaps error strikes?

I do it (search) at our dining room table with incandescent lighting. My wife also picked up this fantastic LED desk lamp that I look at everything under, can't hardly stand to look at coins without it now. Normal searching is unmagnified...until my eyesight gets worse.

I also have a nice litle $8 10X loupe from my local shop that has an LED light on it that I use when necessary.

I use a headband magnifier that I got after my grandfather died; he used it to work on antique clocks. It works great, keeps both hands free, anways in focus, and I do not have to stay in one position to look through a fixed magnifier. I usually sit with a halogen swing type light over my shoulder, checking out each coin, tossing the keepers in one pile and the culls in another. This works great for me.

A 5 bulb chandelier over my dining room table with 60W soft white Philips bulbs in each. Works great with almost near color accuracy for all my coins.

Well, what seems to work best after trying different types is to use a halogen desk lamp and then I also bought a headband magnifier called an optivisor from Amazon. Good for those of us with with less than perfect eyesight. I can also wear my glasses under them if I want but I noticed that they actually work better without my glasses on. If interested, here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015IN8J6

One of my Christmas presents was a magnifying fluorscent circular lamp. I've used the magnifying portion of it twice since....(the first time, and the last time) The lighting from it is fantastic though.

I'm old enough to need prescription lenses in order to view things clearly up close. I'm also lucky enough to work in the optical industry. I've fallen in love with my "computer-glasses". Basically, they're a pair of "no-line" bifocals that are strictly for computer use. The top portion of the lens allows me to view the computer clearly, and the bottom portion of the lens allows me to see things "up-close".

These things also work well in the kitchen when ya need to slice and dice vegetables, meats...or read the instructions for making mac-n-cheese.

All that said, while roll-searching...I still keep a magnifying glass and loupe on my desk. And nothing beats taking a few pics with the digital cam...and then uploading them onto the pc for a better look.

OttLite True Color Lamps. This is the best for reading or looking at coins.
