I have a 1964D nickel that has a "ping" when flipped like the War Nickels. I have tons of other 1964 nickels as other dates while flipping I cannot mimic the ping sound except with a War Nickel.

Would any silver content be in any 1964 nickels?
Thanks

The chances aren't very good. It couldn't happen unless struck on a planchet intended for a different denomination/country...all nickel planchets since like 1880 have been of the same compound (except for the silver War Nickels from 1942-45).

If it is indeed silver...you got something special!

And weight, Diameter and thickness too would be good.

the only silver nickels in 1964 that are known were struck on dime planchets, and are about the same size and thickness as a dime

If the weight and diameter are correct, then it is virtually impossible for it to be silver.

I found a similar "nickel" (I would have to verify the date), which left a "ringing in my ears" as well. I will take it to work and do an electrical conductivity test on it. And report my findings along with the weight (grams), diameter, and thickness (vernier caliper), and of course PICTURES.

6/17/2010 Update
I tried the electrical conductivity of my "suspect" 1964-D Jefferson, and was not able to collect an accurate reading (the contact area of the conductivity probe was greater than the raised surface area of the specimen). My apologies for stirring the pot.

There wouldn't be silver in a 1964 nickel that's anywhere near the right size - at all. Chances are zero.

With weight to a tenth of a gram and an image, you might get help here that would be better than guessing. A lot of weird stuff happened at the Mint in 1964. I am by no means saying you have nothing worth investigating, but asking for a valid answer with a description of a sound is a bit much to ask anyone.
