Can you elaborate a little more John?

For instance, if the "IN GOD" is incuse on the die, how does an image end up incuse on the coin?

I figured most likely deterioration or some kind of other damage, but I still want to understand how this happens.

This is very common with mid-80s cents. It is Die Deterioration. It's a rippling effect of the surface of the die, and the result is exactly what you see.
