One of the great advantages of working offshore for a living is you sometimes get access to some very neat stuff.
I couple of years ago I rescued a set of chart draws from the bridge of a boat that was being scrapped.

The last few weeks I have stripped and re-varnished them. Today I built the frame for the base. I also ordered a custom cut sheet of 5mm safety glass to build the top part.

After two years its finally beginning to look like it might be a nice coin storage system. I will make updates to this post as I progress.

A nice work on the drawers but your base looks a little-bit flimsy.
Don't let your cat (child, dog) under it.
Sorry, I am a cabinet-maker and I couldn't help it.

Its 52 inches by 41 and 36 inches high so far
The base is not complete its just the frame. I will be putting half inch plywood panels in the gaps on the side and back. The Front will eventually have doors and a central support, the corners will be reinforced with aluminum.

A non-trivial percentage of the total minted.

Very nice and I must say it makes me jealous. Last year our home was robbed. I now have to keep any valuables in a safety deposit box at the bank.

I love it! That would be great for storing art work or your USGS map collection. Will you be building customized compartments, for example a tray proof sets, PCGS holders, etc?

Customized storage will be in the base unit. The bottom four drawers will be lined with a cut out template for holding 23mm air-tites and lined with felt. The top draw will be divided for slabs. The top will be glass and raised enough to get some lighting around the edge. I figure at the rate I work it will be another year or two before its done.

Great idea Richard, I hope you didnt take out a patent cause I'm copying that, my bro has some excess file cabinets (drawers) for architect's building plans, made of hardwood, having been replaced with the modern steel ones.

Great idea, thanks

btw, just received the four australian 1966 50c, and your right, they look even better than the pictures, thanks again !

Worked some more on the base today
Today I cut and fitted the side panels. I also fitted stiffeners to the back which will be left open. There are two electrical outlets on the wall where it's going and I want access to them the for the top lights.
I also put in the bottom rail on the front than the divider for the doors. Finished it off by staining the outside.

Looks like the cabinets I saw in Engineering offices right here in the USA some time back. All gone today due to CAD except in possibly some really old companies. Naturally the wood being old would not give off any vapors but if I were you I'd really wait for some time now if you've used Varnishes and stains. The vapors from those may seap out for a long time and if your coins are in such a closed invironment, those seaping vapors could linger for a long time.
When finished you may want to place some just normal, everyday coins in each drawer to see if there are any effects.

Been doing some more work on my coin storage system

Made the doors today and installed the lights in the top.

All I have left on the frame is to cover the top and install the glass.
That just leaves making the correct size cut outs for the draws and felting them.
Maybe I'll have it finished this year...
