My dad is into coins, though I'm not sure exactly what he has. He's new at it though.
Are there any coin collecting related gifts I could surprise him with?
Thanks!

Depending on how old he is...

I recommend a proof set from the year of his birth. Or a nice commemorative of the same year

If he's new at it, he might also like some coin books so he can learn more.

Links to the books on Amazon so you can see what they look like - a local bookstore might have these as well.

The Red Book (history, information, and a (somewhat high) price guide on US coins): http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Book-Un...14697&sr=8-1

Grading: ANA Grading Standards: http://www.amazon.com/Official-Amer...14811&sr=8-1
Photograde: http://www.amazon.com/Photograde-Of...14811&sr=8-4

If he likes a particular type such as Lincoln Cents, there are books that deal specifically with certain types, as well. Good luck!

There are so many things you can get a coin collector.
Many are inexpensive.
White cotton gloves for handling coins
a small electric scale for weighing coins
a set of digital calipers for measuring coins
magnifiers & loups both for examining coins under magnification.
a flat cinch stapler for mounting coins in 2x2s
Membership in the ANA
A subscription to a coin magazine
Reference books.

hope that give you some ideas.

Be careful or you will become hooked on collecting a well.
Have fun

Yeah - that might be a better question - Olivia, how much are you looking to spend?

It's a father's day gift...Though he isn't coming home from Vacation till Friday.
I'd spend up to $100 if I knew he liked/needed it.

I like the scale idea - Haven't seen one in his office.
I also like the book suggestions. He has the Red Book and the BLUE book....but not the others.

You guys are awesome!
I don't know what wheat cents and Dasco albums are.

Maybe a gift certificate from the local coin shop. Then you could go with him to pick out something he needs.

@wornslick - Yes:) Good idea. In fact, I am headed to check out two nearby coinshops now...So I'll see what they have, and maybe do a giftcertificate.
Thanks.

@Grace...That was my first thought....but then I realized he may have a set from his birth year. I know he got some things from his father too.
The cool thing is that his birthday is in September...So when I realize what else he needs/doesn't have I can aim for birthday presents too!

@rggoodie - Yes, I may go see if I can get a scale.
(All I see in his office is a ruler/balance)...Seems a lil' archaic?
And your other suggestions, I'll use if he needs any of them for his bday.

My fathers day gift from my son--a great book I have been wanting--Fascinating Facts, Mysteries and Myths About US coins by Robert R. Van Ryzin. Having trouble deciding whether to start reading it or start searching that box of cents that is calling my name.

In my opinion, the best coin related gift would be reference books followed by magnifying glass and albums.

For about $100 I know I would love a 1909 s Lincoln.
Buy him a hundred dollar coin he wouldn't normally splurge on

I like the magnifying ideas. I dont know if there's a coin microscope on the market for $100 but they open up a whole new world for collecting.
