I have a 87 O (no pic - see link below) that has the same "belly button" (Rev Image) about at the same spot (mine is smaller from the looks of it). Is it PMD or something else?

The topic below is locked.

This feature stuck in my mind when we discussed it; I knew I'd seen it before. A little research ensues.

It's a strike issue, known most on 1885-O Morgans but seen on other Morgans, and other issues, as well.

That thread was an interesting discussion - at least, after a couple beers soothed my headache - but it didn't explain the location and absolutely circular shape of the feature. I could easily attribute that to my lack of knowledge of metallurgy, but things still don't ring right to me.

Interesting in that there were a few folks who knew not what they were looking at, yet still displayed a desire to know, beyond the boundaries of attribution and value.
Eventually culminating in a discussion between an engineer and a physicist, the gray area between the how and the why, the macro and the micro mechanics of the planchets, yet no discussion whatsoever of the force that caused either this plasticity and molecular crystallization to occur. The characteristics and properties of metals is required study for certain areas of both fields, and should not be confused with metallurgy.

It is my belief that gaining an understanding of the causes of specific phenomena on a coin would naturally enhance the overall collecting experience.

I have never seen such a coin as is referred to, but would be highly interested in doing so. Are there some nice photos somewhere?

Well played around with the camera and loupe to take this pic. It's not the best but you can make it out. Until one of the pros from here or VW stumbles upon one of these in person it's on hold.
The only known years are 1885 O and 1921 (forget the mm). This is a 87 O.

Gene, I re read the whole thing on VW - The 95 O looks to be a "typo" by the poster who then corrects them selves later in the dialogue.

Does anyone know if LVA has studied one of these coins in person?

Peace
