I thought perhaps someone would be interested in seeing the latest addition to my collection of Riddell counterfeits.

My-Latest-Riddell-From-Ebay---1835-Zs-Om

This coin is a very close relative of the Riddell coin listed as # 421. The coins use the same eagle and cap design but like the original coins - it has variant spacings on the features added by hand. The dies for the Riddell coin and this one apparently used the same punch for the eagle and cap but then added other features like letters with individual punches.

The coin was sold on ebay with no warning as to what it was but with VERY large photos. The seller is well known to me and he obviously knew the coin was a contemporary forgery because he started it ABOVE retail. I got it for the opening bid - a BIG Surprise.

In this case, the "no tell no cancel" policy ebay uses probably resulted in the seller getting too little for his coin. The other counterfeit collectors likely missed it. It is the FIRST of its type I have ever seen.

It may be unique.

Bob, would you be so kind as to post pictures of the edge and let us know the weight?

Congratulations! A rare, possily unique, piece is an excellent find indeed.

It made me wonder a bit. When a forgery is this scarce, what is the reason? Was it a teststrike which was abandoned because the forgerers decided it would be unlikely to be able to enter regular circulation? Or perhaps they were interrupted before they could produce as many as originally planned? Or interrupted after production, but before they could circulate the pieces - which was then melted down? I suppose noone would go to the bother of intentionally forging a limited supply.

Some forgers were caught at other times dies broke. But I suspect that mostly the counterfeits were DESTROYED by banks, merchants or others. Many varieties really are quite scarce.
