I just got a few restored date buffaloes that were not done very nicely. The restored area has a very distracting white out look. Has anyone found a way to even out the look on restored dates? Re-toned them? Treated the whole coin to create a better overall look?

Captainkurt: I'm not sure if what you're seeing is simply the dull, grainy aftereffect that will ALWAYS result from treating the date area or if what you have is one of those truly ugly coins where the chemical was not fully removed and has continued to slowly react with the metal.

Once you put the chemical on the coin, the area touched by the chemical is forever altered and cannot be made to look totally natural again...EVER. You can make the coin look UNIFORM by treating the entire coin - ALL of the surfaces. If the coin you have is not too ugly, throwing it into jewelry cleaner for a few hours will also make it look a little more uniform.

Hi Weerdsteev,
I have been all over your web site. You do great work! So here are some photos but what I see in hand is worse. White bleached out marks and what looks like raised crud on the perimeter of the treated area.

I know I will not get the natural look back and that is not what I am hoping to accomplish. I just want to make them look less obviously and poorly restored.

I'm interested also. I have always thought they were trash after the acid is placed on the date. Maybe an after picture would be nice.

There are no secrets being kept. I just didn't want to take up forum time and space going back and forth on a subject that most members probably frown upon. Kurt and I talked and we agreed that I'd completely restore Kurt's nickels for him. (They're all KEYS) If he wishes, he can show you all the final results.

I hope you did some magic, weirdsteev. I just had about 600 of these to date and I have no idea what I'm doing beyond nic-a-date.
