Wow I am surprised that no one is jumping on him for offering a relatively low offer compared to spot. Afterall, I have seen numerous times where members here have blasted dealers for making offers similar to this. The silver alone appears to be $4.95 face value which puts silver melt at over $63.00, so that's why I am surprised no one is blasting him for giving the lady a relatively low offer. If a dealer did this, members on this forum would be all over the dealer for ripping the person off.

Yeah, he sure took her for a ride alright. I feel dirty just reading this post.
So much for ethics among the numismatic brotherhood.

This only makes the entire community look bad.
I'm embarassed to be a member here now.

When I worked at a coin shop, we would have offered at least $50.90 for this:

10x face for 90% silver (minimum we would have paid)
3 cents each for wheats (sound like common dates, common conditions)
5-10 cents each for nickels (minimum)

Regardless of what the customer said going in (i.e. take no less than $20), we would have offered a fair market price for it.

This post could turn ugly and there is no benefit for anyone in that!

I hope everyone keep this discussion at a civil level ..... and keep in mind that there are all kinds of opinions relative to coin ethics when faced with a situation such as this.

Perhaps some of you recall my post on the ethics of the bank manager who was buying silver at 2X face at his dump machine?

This 'bank manager ethics' post elicited a lot of energy and opinions ..... all of which are valid in this discussion.

Soooo .... I suggest you offer your opinion but keep the tone civil.

She or the hubby could have figured out a reasonable price with a little homework. Hubby said no less than 20 and she got 25 and went home happy............

Maybe I have spent too much time haggling overseas, but I say good deal!! The lady had a goal of 20 dollars which you met and then some while still securing yourself an excellent deal!

When haggling overseas, I usually offer about 35% and wait to see their reaction. LOL If it is too low, their eyes get big and they sort of squeal/grunt. LOL

Fantastic purchase! I would make that buy all day long.

I don't know what the big deal is. Fatboy has given himself an education in coins and is just using that knowledge for his own gain. Isn't it the same as getting a college education so you can get a better-paying job or build a successful business? You use that education to benefit yourself. The thing to remember is that if Fatboy isn't fair, word will get around and the silver river will dry up. That's how capitalism works.

If you are following the thread about Nod2003 finding an undated 1916 SLQ, this is the same thing on a smaller scale. Nod paid $3.00 or so. What's that coin worth, $1,500.00, more? He benefits because he took the time to educate himself. If he decides to sell it, should he split the difference with the dealer who sold it to him? I don't know anyone who will say that.

Fatboy didn't go looking for this purchase, it came to him. He even paid more than what was asked.

I would like to apologize to any one on this form that I offended.I was just excited to get what I thought was a good deal that I wanted to share.I asked a question awhile back on some Morgans that I was trying to buy from a guy at work and most people said I was offering to much. It's not like a hold a gun to any one's head I let it be known that I collect coin's and people have offered things to me,I have offered people prices in the past and they said no this one said yes.I always try to find out before I even look at what people have to sell what they may want because if they want alot of money EVEN if it's worth it I may not be able to afford it.I spent many year's in sale's(industrial equipment) and the one I know for a fact if you don't ask for the sale you'll never get it.If the same kind of deal comes again I WILL make it.I know it's a bad example but the show Pawn Stars people do stuff like this every day The"EXPERT says this so and so is worth 5,000.00 and the guy sells it to the pawn shop for 2,000.Again just thought people would like to see the stuff I bought. LOL Tim. I learned ten years ago to avoid the fleet landing junk! It is nice to look at though. Gives you a preview of what to look avoid later. Or look for (San Miguel). Hehehe.

I prefer to go out in town, far away from the pier nowadays. I enjoy walking the local markets and souks, but you must definitely be careful in places. LOL Talk about close, winding alleys. hehehe
